Audi quattro®

quattro: grip, whatever the weather

quattro is our renowned four-wheel-drive technology. But it's more than just a technology - quattro is a philosophy. It stands for driving safety and sportiness, technical competence and a dynamic approach to life.

With quattro, optimal drive is delivered to each wheel for superior handling and phenomenal grip – even in less than perfect conditions.

Since the debut of the Audi quattro in 1980, we've sold more than five million cars with permanent all-wheel drive. And now quattro is available across the entire Audi range.

quattro for every journey

Everyday quattro

Even on perfect roads, quattro works to combine precise control with the dynamic responsiveness that makes driving an Audi so rewarding.

quattro in the rain

Slippery roads can cause loss of traction resluting in poor grip. quattro constantly analyses the grip from each of your Audi's four wheels, delivering power to each of them.

quattro on the ice and snow

Ice and snow can make even familiar roads treacherous. quattro means all four wheels work together, delivering power where it's needed and helping you stay on the road and stay safe.

quattro on the moon

We're supporting The Part-Time Scientists in the Google Lunar XPRIZE competition by sharing knowledge of technologies including quattro all-wheel drive technology. Learn about the Audi Mission to the Moon.

quattro availability

quattro is now available across the whole Audi model range on selected trims and engines.

Affordable quattro

You don't have to be a racing driver, or an off-roader to appreciate the benefits of quattro. It is more affordable than you might think so you can feel the value of quattro every day.

Different types of quattro

Hydraulic multi-plate clutch

hydraulic

Hydraulic multi-plate clutch quattro is designed for models where the engine is mounted across the chassis rather than lengthways. It constantly adapts to road conditions.
Ranges: A1/A3/Q3/TT

Self-locking centre differential

self-locking

Designed for models with a lengthways-fitted engine, the self-locking centre differential system splits power asymmetrically to achieve perfect balance between all four wheels.
Ranges: A4/A5/A6/A7/A8/Q5/Q7

R8 quattro all-wheel drive

R8 quattro all-wheel drive

The newly developed quattro enables flexible distribution of up to 100% of torque between front and rear axles, depending on the driving situation and weather conditions.
Range: R8

quattro sport

quattro with Sports differential

quattro with Sports differential further enhances the quattro system's abilities by splitting the drive variably between each of the rear heels for an even more agile and dynamic driving experience.

When cornering, the drive is biased to the outside rear wheel as it's turning through a larger radius reducing the need for steering corrections. Sports differential also helps to avoid wheel-slip when braking, improving fuel consumption and reducing brake wear.

quattro with Sports differential is available on selected quattro models from the A4 upwards.
