Driving in the dark with foresight

With adaptive light Audi has developed a system which for the first time illuminates the area at the side around the front of the vehicle. This provides clear visibility when taking tight, unlit bends and turning into side streets.

Operating principle

With standard-design headlights the way ahead - and any obstacles - in the new direction of travel remain unlit for a short time after turning. Only once the vehicle has fully changed direction are the headlight illumination and direction of travel brought back into line.

With the A8's adaptive light feature Audi has installed an additional 35 Watt H8 bulb between the dipped and main beam bulbs in the Xenon plus front headlight unit, providing enhanced illumination when turning off a straight road and when taking tight bends. With the low-beam lights switched on and at a speed of 7 mph, this light unit is automatically activated if the turn indicator is operated for some time, if the driver steers sharply, or if reverse is engaged.

If the driver engages reverse, the adaptive light unit is automatically switched on at both sides. A wide sideward illumination improves peripheral visibility and so aids orientation when reversing. If adaptive light is ordered, the Xenon plus headlight system is included.
