The music is played over five channels: at the front right and left, in the centre, and at the rear right and left. Audi developed innovative technologies to produce this. A special algorithm can control the tones in the car interior and produces an almost perfectly balanced surround sound experience at every seat. A high-resolution digital signal processor distributes the signal between the various speakers in such a way that a sound quality similar to that in a concert hall is produced. The three-dimensional impression is optimised even for conventional stereo sources, which are converted to five separate audio channels for reproduction.
The AudioPilot process has been developed for a previously unsurpassed level of dynamic noise compensation. This dynamic noise compensation feature efficiently masks ambient noise. A measuring microphone records the noise level in the vehicle and regulates the volume of the music in the frequency ranges affected by the unwanted noise in such a way that music masks this disturbing noise, adjusting to the position of the sun roof, windows or type of road surface. As a result disturbing noise is no longer perceived on the whole – the dynamic driving noise compensation function can even compensate for the sound of a passing motorcycle. The vehicle occupants experience pure listening pleasure.
The BOSE surround sound system has an output of 350 watts. Low-frequency sound is produced by two 200 mm woofers in the front doors and two 168 mm woofers in the rear doors. These are supplemented by a 300 mm subwoofer and two 80 mm surround speakers on the rear shelf for low bass tones. All speakers have neodymium magnets for maximum performance.
Mid-high range sound at the front is produced by 70 mm cone speakers integrated into the dashboard. A third 70 mm speaker forms the centre channel in the middle. The bass speakers are supported at the rear by two 36 mm tweeters in the top shoulder.
