Quickly and safely to your destinationAs well as high-performance functionality, fast, user-friendly operation of the navigation system is key to safe, relaxed motoring. That is why the navigation unit is built into the Multi Media Interface (MMI), and controlled by the operator control unit in the centre console. Destinations can also be set in a highly user-friendly way using the Voice Control System. | |
Even more comfort and functionalityAlongside interactive destination input based on the MMI's menu guidance, the A8 with the Audi DVD-based navigation system permits full destination input by voice command, in conjunction with the optional voice control system.
The benefits of the DVD database include nine times the storage capacity of a CD, much faster map loading and the zoom function, as well as numerous additional search criteria and advanced storage options. When planning a route, for example, a range of special destinations and destinations pulled from an address book can be selected, such as restaurants, hotels and filling stations. Destinations are defined by way of special icons on the map. At the same time the user can specify whether the route to his intended destination should use motorways, toll roads or ferries or not. In addition, the memory offers various categories according to which destinations can be stored and retrieved: address book, favourite destinations, routes, "last 20 destinations", top special destinations (service station, hotel, P&R along the route).
For localisation the DVD-based navigation system, as previously, uses the GPS (Global Positioning System) satellite system, together with signals from odometer and rotation sensors. The GPS aerial on the top of the tailgate has been replaced by a new aerial unit concealed behind the top part of the rear window.
The map design shown on the MMI display reproduces the look of a real street plan: road names, and even names of side streets, are shown. As well as map information on the MMI display, routing instructions are also presented on the driver information system display on the dash.
A further convenience function is the dynamic route guidance. It is able to adapt routes based on the latest traffic situation. The navigation system checks the latest traffic reports - it receives RDS-TMC (Traffic Message Channel) automatically - for any delays, jams or blockages and searches for bypass routes. When dynamic navigation is active the route is automatically recomputed. Navigation DVDThe navigation DVD, included in the navigation system ex factory, contains a comprehensive map of the relevant territory (the area covered on the DVD supplied being Europe).
Realistic data is the key to reliable routing. Consequently, a navigation DVD should be replaced after a time with an updated version. Navigation DVDs and annual updates can be obtained from your Audi Centre. | HighlightExperience a new-style operator control concept: the Multi Media Interface (MMI). |
