Diesel direct injection

In the many years that have passed since the diesel engine was invented, various fuel injection systems have been developed. Direct injection is economical, but initially made the engine somewhat noisy and uneven at idle; it was therefore used initially only in utility vehicles. It was not until engineers at Audi refined the engine that it became acceptable in passenger cars. In 1989 Audi went a big step further with the direct injection turbodiesel. These power plants not only matched the power and performance of spark-ignition engines, but even surpassed them significantly in terms of torque. Since then, Audi’s TDI® engines have been synonymous with power, high performance, low fuel consumption and elasticity. Refinement in fuel injection technology and engine encapsulation made the engines quieter. Audi is the only automobile manufacturer in the premium segment to offer combinations such as TDI® and quattro®, TDI® and multitronic® or TDI® and common-rail fuel injection.
