Conventional paints contain organic solvents that are harmful to the environment. They enter the air when during application and drying, necessitating complicated cleaning efforts. In recent years it has been possible to develop high-quality paints in which water largely takes the place of solvents. The solvent content of the fillers and basecoat paints at Audi has been reduced by more than 85 percent. In addition, the paint shops at Audi increasingly use economical, fully-automatic paint application techniques. Processing these modern paints requires that high professional standards be maintained, precisely controlled climatic conditions and the most stringent standards of cleanliness in the paint shop.
