All components in contact with one another (including bearing surfaces, pistons or piston rings) or transmission parts (such as gears) must be “run (or broken) in” after assembly in a new vehicle. Running-in recommendations are explained in the owner’s manual. As a general rule, until 1,500 kilometres the engine should not be driven at more than two-thirds of its nominal engine speed. After that and up to about 3,000 kilometres, engine speed can be gradually increased. By then all of the parts will have adjusted to each other.
