Audi Q7 Inderpendent Review

On the road

Performance
Two Audi Q7 models are available: a 230PS 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel and a 345PS 4.2-litre V8 petrol model. We've only driven the diesel so far, which provides ample acceleration - its standard six-speed auto providing a quiet cruise or rapid performance when necessary.

Ride & handling
All Audi Q7 models come with air suspension as standard, letting the driver choose between comfort and sports settings. You can even lower the car when loading the boot, or raise it for off-road work. It rides comfortably, soaking up the worst road scars, yet the Audi Q7 corners with poise.

Refinement

At all speeds, the Audi Q7 is quiet. Passengers will rarely be bothered by engine, wind or road noise, making this a very relaxing way to travel. It's as refined as many executive cars.

Ownership

Buying & owning
The Audi Q7 will be a sensible investment and it is expected to hold on to its value tenaciously. However, its bulk means it won't be cheap to run; every model falls in the top company car tax band and even the diesel averages only 26.9mpg.

Quality & reliability
Examples we've driven feel very well constructed, with top-class materials throughout. The Audi Q7 shares around 10% of its parts with the VW Touareg and Porsche Cayenne, neither of which have a reputation for faults.

Safety & security
Standard four-wheel drive will help keep the Audi Q7 on the road, backed up by electronic stability and differential lock systems. Twin front and side airbags are standard, while curtain side airbags provide head protection for all three rows. An alarm is fitted to every model.

In the cabin

Behind the wheel
Audi has carved out a strong reputation for its interiors - and the Audi Q7 is no different. Everything is where you'd expect it to be, and the controls operate with a slick precision. A wide range of adjustment lets you find a good driving position.

Space & practicality

Every model comes with three rows of seats as standard, the third row folding flat into the boot floor when not needed. The front two rows of seats provide plenty of space, while the rearmost two seats are fit only for children or adults on short trips. The boot offers 330 litres as a seven-seater, or a vast 775 litres as a five-seater.

Equipment
Considering its cost, the Audi Q7 is missing some desirable kit as standard. That's not to say it's stripped out - every model comes with seven seats, alloy wheels, air suspension, climate control, cruise control and electric windows as standard. for the price, though, we'd at least expect leather trim.
