S tronic explained

How S tronic delivers pure, uninterrupted power

The whole point of a conventional manual clutch is to stop power being driven to the gearbox while you change gear, which costs you in both time and efficiency.

With S tronic, there’s no interruption. It has a two-part transmission shaft effectively giving you two gearboxes in one. The inner shaft feeds the odd-numbered gears and the outer shaft drives the even-numbered gears while power is driven to one of the shafts via the twin multi-plate clutch.

Control logic decides which gear is most likely to be needed next. So, for example, if you’re accelerating in second, third gear is automatically pre-selected providing a seamless, virtually imperceptible change when required. In this way, no power is wasted – the engine is always driving the wheels.

How’s your driving?

With S tronic, virtually none of the engine’s power is lost during gear changes and you’ll experience very sporty acceleration. On the other hand, because S tronic changes gear so smoothly and quickly, you’ll squeeze more from every drop of fuel when driving more conservatively.

So whether you’re driving for optimal acceleration or for economy, Audi’s S tronic technology gives you the best of both worlds.
