Plug-in hybrid and electric home charging

Home charging

Why install a home wall box?

• The most convenient way to charge an EV is to use a home wall box. Most EV drivers tend to charge overnight (when most electric vehicle tariffs are cheaper) enabling a full charge to be ready for their commute the next day.
• The installation of the wall box will depend on the position of your home fuse box or meter, and in some cases groundworks may be required for installation.
• Most UK homes have single-phased power, which means a 7kW wall box can be installed. Some larger homes with three-phase power may be able to host a higher-powered 22kW unit.
• Audi's recommended supplier for installing a home wall box is Ohme.

Where will the wall box be installed?

• The location of the home wall box will depend on the position of electricity points (such as a home fuse box or meter) and how the car is parked. Most installations are eligible for standard installation, however, in some cases groundworks and additional upgrades may be required.
• We recommend you speak to Ohme (our recommended supplier for home wall boxes) to find out more.

How long does it take for a home wall box to be installed by Ohme?

• Standard installs can take 3-4 weeks. This is from the order being placed and you providing Ohme the necessary and correct information needed for the EVHS grant application as well as the remote survey, otherwise the process may be delayed. Non-standard installs (approximately 10% of installs are non-standard) take longer. This is because in some cases groundworks and additional upgrades may be required.
• On the day of installation, Ohme allocates 2 to 3 hours for standard installations. If for some reason Ohme can’t complete on the day – for example, because the installation has unexpected extra works or the install that was originally assumed from the remote survey is a more complex non-standard install – then Ohme will provide a revised no-obligation quotation (valid for 90 days) and, if accepted, will reschedule an installation date.

What qualifies as a standard install?

• A standard installation depends on various factors, including the age and condition of the existing home wiring, and the location of the nearest electricity point/meter. Approximately 90% of installations qualify for a standard installation.

What if the installation is non-standard?

• Your home wall box provider (we recommend Ohme) will advise if your home wall box install is a non-standard install and, if this is the case, provide you with a quote.

What is the EV Chargepoint grant?

• The Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) has introduced an excellent scheme that makes installing an at-home charging station a lot more affordable. With the EV Chargepoint Grant you could receive a 75% contribution towards the cost and installation of one charging point (up to a maximum of £350)¹
o Available only to those who live in flats and rental accommodation.
o An OZEV-approved installer is required to claim this discount. Our partner Ohme can manage this for you.

How long does it take to charge with a home wall box?

• A home wall box can charge an EV faster than a 3-pin plug. Charging speed will be dependent on the home charging unit purchased and the vehicle’s capabilities as well as other factors such as outside temperature.
• A 7kW home wall box charges an electric vehicle overnight. For example, an Q8 e-tron from empty to full can be charged in about 14 to 18 hours and provides around 18 miles of range per hour of charge. Whereas for a Q5 TFSI e, a full charge takes about 2 and a half hours and provides around 15 miles of range per hour of charge.
• For charging times, please refer to the model specific information below. For Audi e-tron models, you can use our clever charging calculator below.

Will my home charging point work for other brands of electric vehicles?

• Yes, if they use a Type 2 plug. This is the most common plug connector type in Europe and is what Audi and most European manufacturers use. However, some brands use a Type 1 plug connector – check your owner's manual for details - and so the home charging point may not be suitable for these cars. If you are unsure, we recommend you contact your home charging provider. Some providers like our partner Ohme offer a universal socket.

Can I charge my electric Audi at home via a 3 pin socket?

• You can charge using a 3-pin household socket and the Audi Compact Charging System (which comes with the car). However, the charging time will be very slow and is not as efficient as having a home wall box installed. You should contact an electrician before plugging into a domestic socket for the first time as:
i. Suitability for charging using a domestic socket will depend on the condition of the wiring in your home
ii. If the domestic socket is on the same circuit as other appliances, particularly those in frequent use, the additional amperage may be enough to trip a breaker switch
iii. Establishing a separate circuit for charging will help make sure the car is fed a full night of uninterrupted current. We recommend using an electric vehicle home wall box with its own separate circuit
• Audi recommends you keep the Compact Charging System in the vehicle in case of an emergency or temporary need to plug in to a 3-pin socket whilst away from home. For your home, we recommend you install a wall box. Our recommended supplier is Ohme

Can I use the Audi Compact Charging System as my wall box?

• You can, however we don’t recommend this. Unless your home has a 3-phase industrial socket, the unit would need to either be plugged into a 3-pin socket, which will charge at very slow speeds, or you would need to have a technician come and install a specific circuit for the Audi Compact Charging System.
• Audi recommends you keep the Compact Charging System in the car in case of an emergency and you need to plug it in a 3-pin socket whilst away from home. For your home, we recommend you install a wall box. Our recommended supplier is Ohme.

What if my home is not suitable for a home wall box, is there an On-street Residential Charge Point scheme?

• Sometimes, a wall box isn’t suitable for a home install. For example, this could be because wiring is unfit or because the house doesn’t have off-street parking.
• Some local authorities offer the On-Street Residential Chargepoint Scheme (ORCS), which helps towards the cost of installing on-street charging points. Please contact your local authority.
• Alternatively, you may be happy relying on your work and public chargers.

Who do Audi recommend for Home Energy?
