Oil consumption

A certain amount of oil consumption is a normal characteristic of all engines. But the rate of usage can be influenced by numerous factors such as:

  • driving style
  • journey type
  • general wear & tear (i.e. high mileage)
  • lack of correct servicing
  • engine run low on oil or coolant
  • overheated engine
  • poor quality repairs
  • performance tuning
  • type and quality of oil used

To ensure you are using the correct type of oil for your Audi please refer to your Owners Manual.

Owners Manual example

Oil Consumption - open bonnet

The acceptable level of oil consumption we specify is up to 0.5 litres per 1000km (approx. 620 miles). If your Audi has a higher oil consumption level than this, or you have concerns please contact your local Audi Centre.

The Centre will be able to accurately measure the rate of oil consumption by running a simple test. The Centre will then be able to diagnose the cause - technicians will be able to evaluate whether there are any other underlying issues/contributing factors - and repair as necessary.

Oil consumption is a normal occurrence in all engines but will vary by design. To minimise this you should ensure your car is serviced in accordance with the owner’s handbook. Always ensure that all issues are resolved as quickly as possible by your local Audi Centre.

Topping up your oil

Ask your Audi dealer for a convenient top up kit for just £18.50. The kit includes a handy pouch, oil funnel, wipes, gloves and velcro fixings to keep it safe within your boot.

When topping up, it's essential to pour oil gradually and not top up with too much as it can cause engine damage. Check your dipstick to ensure you have sufficiently topped up your engine oil; this should be up to the maximum level indicator on your dipstick.
